Hello, my name is Caitlin and I live north of Auckland by the beach with my partner Matt. My background is in the film and TV industry but I got into sewing in 2018. I started out sewing dribble and food bibs for my nieces and nephews as presents which my siblings loved and slowly the requests kept coming in. I decided to challenge myself to make a jacket from recycled woollen blankets and cotton fabric, which turned out to be a huge success. Multiple jackets were made for family after that, my siblings kept mentioning all the compliments the kid’s jackets would get while they were out, so I decided to start selling them.
Starting something new is always nerve wracking for me but with the support of Matt I finally took the leap and haven’t looked back. Thankfully Matt also knows how to work a camera and with his knowledge around technology we were able to create a lovely website and create our social media pages. “Caikin” came about from my first nephew Koen who couldn’t say my name properly and the turtle logo is because when I was 5 Mum asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and my answer was a turtle…so that’s how it all started.
Caikin Sewing are passionate about the environment; all items are packed in compostable packaging, our jackets and vests are made of recycled blankets and we now sell reusable wipes. I am always looking for new ways to be environmentally friendly and will continue to do so.
Every purchase means the absolute world to me as I navigate my way through this sewing journey, seeing the little ones in Caikin Sewing clothing melts my heart. I love knowing they are warm in their jackets and vests on their adventures.
